Visitors to the Amüseum at the waterfall can now discover the former Electoral Mill from 1657 using their smartphones and the free Lauschtour app. The museum's new audio tour offers an extraordinary listening experience.

You will be guided through the permanent exhibition, which showcases traditional Saarburg craft professions such as boatman, tanner, shoemaker, and bell founder, with the help of the Lauschtour. At a total of 12 stations, the exciting history comes to life. In the Lauschtour, former radio journalist Marco Neises guides you through the museum's rooms, complemented by interesting and curious stories as well as anecdotes from Saarburg museum guide Theresia Vadrot. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the tour addresses a particular highlight. Currently, the hydropower facility from 1935 in the basement of the museum is undergoing extensive renovation and will soon provide power for the museum and the adjacent area. The work on the facility is expected to be completed in the fall. From spring 2024, this level of the museum will also be accessible again. The Lauschtour highlights the importance of hydropower for the city of Saarburg. The functioning of the hydropower facility is explained by Ewald Kölling, chairman of the Association of Municipal Museums Saarburg. The entire museum tour lasts approximately 40 minutes.

The Mill Museum is open from April to the end of October, Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Closed on Mondays.

Mill museum in Saarburg

Below the waterfall in Saarburg, the waterwheels of the Hackenberger Mill from the 13th/14th century are turning. Originally, there was an oil mill, as well as a fulling mill and a grain mill in operation here.

Parish Church of St.Laurentius

A small cross chapel existed here as early as the 13th century, which was granted the right of baptism in 1370. Following several reconstructions, a new church was built in 1854, in the neo-Gothic style. The three-nave church was heavily damaged in 1944 and was rebuilt simplistically after the war; during this process, parts of the neo-Gothic style could be preserved. The interior of the church impresses with the “Grape Madonna” (around 1500), the baptismal font of stone (1575) as well as the stained-glass windows (1855).

Skippers and fishermen have been populating the banks of the Saar in the lower city since the 17th century. Some of the colourful houses still bear the house symbols of these professions, displaying fishes and anchors. In 1987, a flood protection wall was built in Saarburg as part of the process of expanding the Saar to become a major waterway.

Saarburg's Little Venice

The bridge “Auf dem Graben” offers a wonderful view of the small bridges spanning the Leukbach and the Buttermarkt (Butter market). The narrow rowed houses along the Leukbach have been resting on mighty oak poles for centuries. Originally, the Leuk used to flow around the city, feeding fish ponds and castle trenches of the “Saarburg”. In the 13th century, people forced the Leuk into a new bed without further ado in order to have sufficient extinguishing water in case of any fires.

The Kunoturm is the largest preserved fortified tower of the ancient fortification system of the city. Remnants of the city wall can still be seen on both sides of the tower which was named after its constructor, archbishop, Kuno II von Frankenstein. The crucifix at the tower reminds of the Plague and its dreadful consequences during the Thirty-Year War.

The square is dominated by three-storey residential buildings that represent the era of the baroque bourgeoisie. The square is dominated by the Mabilon House, which became the ancestral home of the Mabilon bell-founding family in 1773 and later the seat of the champagne cellars. The quarry stone building at the back is a former Spanish barracks from the 17th century.

The Churbelun Trail leads around the castle complex. With the new access to the eastern castle slope, the entire complex can now be walked around on foot.

The Protestant Church beneath the castle is a distinctive feature of the city-scape. In 1893, the church was erected in the neo-Gothic style using yellow red sandstone.

The pulsating centre and characteristic hallmark of Saarburg is surrounded by town houses dating back to the 17th up to the early 20th centuries on both sides of the Leuk. In the medieval city, a small ford led through the Leuk. The “Schweinsbrücke” with a view to “Little Venice” leads to the main shopping street. This is also the stop of the Saartalbahn (sightseeing train), which offers a comfortable alternative for viewing the sights during a half-hour tour.

From here, you can see the Kautenturm tower on the Saar. The city tower closed off the medieval city fortifications on the Saar side and served as a customs tower and icebreaker. In the Middle Ages, the Saar served as a trade route between Saarbrücken and Trier. Upstream, the ships were towed, i.e. pulled by people or animals from the towpath.

The castle at the Saar

The once proud and powerful castle, one of the first and mightiest fortresses in the west, was built by Count Siegfried of Luxembourg in 964.

This two-storey shale quarry stone building was erected in 1906. Its well-presented middle section reflects the self-confidence of the bourgeoisie at the beginning of the 20th century. The municipal coat of arms of Saarburg is located in the arch portal. A glockenspiel from the Mabilon bell foundry rings out every half and full hour. Today’s Fruchtmarkt (Fruit market) on the opposite side was the former site of the prime gate to the city, called „die Purt“ (the gate).

In medieval times, the Laurentiustor sealed the fortified upper city off from the lower city, which was unfortified up until the 17th century. The steep and narrow alley has preserved its medieval charm until today.
