In Klein Venedig, the waterfall roars!
Whoever enters the Butter Market can already hear it - Saarburg's main attraction, the 20-meter-high waterfall right in the city center, announces itself with its rushing sound from afar. From several viewing platforms, one can then observe the unique spectacular display: with a loud roar and rush, the massive volumes of water from the now-peacefully flowing Leukbach crash down over the steep rocky cascades, churning white foam. In the valley basin, the waterwheels of the Hackenberger Mill are still driven, and then the Leukbach continues to flow quietly until it merges into the Saar in the “Ländchen.” But it wasn't always like this. The waterfall is due to an urban planning masterpiece from the 11th or 12th century. The city rulers of the time managed to redirect the Leukbach right through the medieval town layout. The aim was to have enough water to extinguish fires. Additionally, they harnessed the power of the water, driving the waterwheels of the town mill (now Hackenberger Mill) and the Electoral Mill (now Amüseum). The Butter Market around the waterfall is the vibrant heart of Saarburg. The picturesque alleyways with a Mediterranean flair and the historical squares invite leisurely strolls and relaxation. The view from the street "Auf dem Graben" of the charmingly lined houses and the small bridges over the Leukbach is lovingly called "Saarburg's Klein Venedig." But not only for that reason; the rows of houses directly along the brook stand on oak piles, just like in the lagoon city. The old town of Saarburg on the Saar river enchants with its narrow streets and colorful fishermen's and boatmen's houses. A series of old house marks featuring motifs like fish, anchors, boat hooks, and oars are indications of ancient trades.
