on the streets of the Romans

The Romans in the Saar-Obermosel holiday region

The Romans ruled our region for the first five centuries. Trier (Augusta Treverorum) became the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century and the largest city north of the Alps. The well-developed long-distance road led from the Mediterranean via Lyon, Metz and Konz and connected Trier with the centre of the Roman Empire. The Romans not only brought us wine, but also left behind numerous traces that you can still visit today.

The streets of the Romans

The Romans left numerous vivid traces in the course of their colonisation of this large region. Whether on foot, on horseback, with heavily laden carts or by ship, their intention was to constantly expand their empire. A prerequisite for this was a dense road network that facilitated transport and development. Rest centres and settlements were built at more or less regular intervals, some of which grew rapidly.

This was linked to the economic, cultural and religious development of the conquered areas and the fusion of their southern culture and way of life with the traditions of the local Celts. Palaces and villas, bridges and luxurious bathing facilities, temples and tombs, wine presses, quarries, mines and lime kilns are eloquent witnesses to an important heritage. Join us on the roads of the Romans!
