Family holiday on the Saar and Upper Moselle

The best time of the year

A holiday with children in the Saar-Obermosel holiday region is varied and surprising. Whether as a short break, a day trip or a longer holiday - great leisure activities and exciting adventures await our little guests here. But there is also plenty of relaxation for parents.

The Roscheider Hof open-air museum invites you to travel back in time and the Saarburg castle complex offers exciting discoveries. A climbing session on the Altfels, a canoe trip through the rapids in the Wiltinger Saarbogen or a speedy ride on the summer toboggan run provide plenty of fun and action. In the bird of prey park, eagles, falcons and buzzards can be observed hunting their prey during the flight show. Young and old explorers alike can enjoy a boat trip on the Saar and Moselle or a ride on the chairlift to lofty heights.

A very special experience is a ride through Saarburg in an electric carriage with virtual reality glasses.

In the Roscheider Hof Open Air Museum you can explore traditional rural everyday life in the whole region, which includes Eifel, Hunsrück and Saargau, as well as parts of Lorraine and Luxembourg. In the school exhibition, there’s a demonstration of the type of conditions in which children had to learn in a 1912 classroom. There is also a traditional grocer’s, a barber and a village pub. In addition there are interesting exhibitions, including "From Corn to Bread" or "Winegrowing on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer". In the building complexes around Roscheider Hof houses and farm buildings from the 19th and early 20th have been rebuilt and furnished exactly as they originally would have been.

The monumental Altfels in Kastel-Staadt is a free-standing rock in the middle of the forest. The Altfels can be climbed via a short via ferrata. Steps and a rope lead up a 240-metre steep incline. You should not suffer from vertigo. On the rock plateau, a unique panoramic view of the Saar Valley awaits the climber at 360 metres above sea level. The Altfels is located on the Kasteler Felsenpfad dream trail. If you don't want to hike the 9 km, you can also reach Altfels from the Walder car park on the L133 between Freudenburg and Taben-Rodt. From there, follow the signs to the Felsenweg for about 1.5 km.

The traditional craftsmanship of bell casting was still practiced here from 1770 until 2002. Today, the bell foundry is open to the public as a museum and, containing the fully preserved equipment, is a unique cultural heritage and industrial monument. Apart from the museum, the Kulturgiesserei offers further interesting services and facilities for young and old, and has thus developed into a popular meeting place.
