The Amüseum at the waterfall
Saarburg
A visit to the Municipal Museum Amüseum at the waterfall is a must. This year, visitors can explore the newly redesigned turbine room of the historic hydroelectric power plant in the museum's basement. In the former electoral mill above the waterfall, electricity was already being produced around 1900, initially with a water wheel and a generator, and from 1936 with a Francis turbine. The city of Saarburg extensively renovated the hydroelectric plant in 2023. A short, comic-style explanatory film in German and English introduces the history and operation of the plant.
Through an audio tour in German, as well as explanatory panels, guests can learn more about the plant, which is historical, sustainable, and state-of-the-art. A quiz on hydropower is offered for children.
In addition to the hydroelectric facility, the museum showcases the traditional Saarburg craft professions (bell founder, printer, shoemaker, tanner, shipper, pharmacist) as well as interesting temporary exhibitions. On the ground floor, a more than 100-year-old parlor invites visitors to chat, linger, and relax (accessible). There is a museum quiz available for children (D, E, F, NL).

Our tip: A new mixed-reality experience makes the heritage of the hydroelectric power plant digitally accessible. Using modern virtual reality goggles, visitors embark on a journey and follow the path of water – from the waterfall to its conversion into electrical energy. The experience combines technical knowledge with immersive visuals and highlights the central role that hydropower has always played for the city.
