The Golden Twenties

6. September 2026

The Golden Twenties with the MARING QUARTET.

Anna Maring, Violin
Melody Lau, Violin
Valentina Grand, Viola
Marianne Fusenig, Cello

This year's concert opens with George Gershwin's Lullaby for string quartet (1919), a melancholic miniature blending classical, jazz, and salon music, particularly characterized by its swinging syncopations typical of the 1920s.

Following this is Sergei Prokofiev's first string quartet, composed in 1930 and "post-revolutionary," as it draws on the traditions of Russian folk music and is thus distinguished by a simpler and more catchy harmonics, while still being quite demanding with its refined polyphony.

Next comes Henriëtte Bosmans' only string quartet, created in 1927, marked by unconventional harmonies, rhythmic nuances, and expressive melodies. To conclude, there will be the Five Pieces for String Quartet by Erwin Schulhoff, with which he achieved his breakthrough in 1924, not least because they are "youthfully cheeky pieces in tune with the times."

The aim of the Society for Contemporary Sound Art Trier is to present demanding chamber music "in the countryside" at "special locations" with "outstanding musicians." The concerts of the Society for Contemporary Sound Art Trier are supported by: Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, Kulturstiftung der Sparkasse Trier, Lottostiftung Rheinland-Pfalz, Galerie Contemporanea, Scheune Minden and Konz Music Festival
