Viez Street

As the Romans moved north, they had to give up many things they had come to love at home, like wine. And so they discovered another intoxicating drink, apple wine. It became the substitute for wine while the newly planted grapevines grew. As a representative of wine, the Roman apple wine was called "Vize-Vinum"... so the story goes. Whether this story is actually true cannot be definitively clarified, but the name has remained: Viez! Viez is a drink in countless variations: pure apple viez, mixtures with pear, quince, or elderberry; and there's the sweet viez, the unfermented apple juice. Traditionally, viez is produced in a dry style. Nowadays, viez is also available as Secco, sparkling wine, or champagne. Viez is produced with an alcohol content of 5 - 7 percent, creating a dry, tart beverage that harmonizes excellently with hearty dishes.

The Viez Road

The streuobst orchards and viez have created a unique tourist route, the “Viezstrasse.” It leads from Merzig on the Saar, winding through the Saargau, all the way to the Moselle city of Trier. The road is approximately 160 km long and travels through a unique landscape with numerous sights and through villages where traditional rural life can still be discovered. Along the route, inns invite visitors to stop and regional producers offer their products.

Note: The approximately 160 km long route is continuously signposted with the logo (apple) and is also excellently suited for a winding motorcycle tour.
