Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve

The approximately 8-kilometer-long river section runs along the towns of Schoden, Wiltingen, Kanzem, and Hamm, surrounded by steep vineyards high above the Saar. Here, several well-known top sites are located within a short distance, such as the Schodener Saarfeils, Wiltinger Gottesfuß, Wiltinger Hölle, and the Kanzemer Altenberg.

The landscape experience in the Wiltinger Saarbogen is diverse and unique: wide river meadows with willows and ashes, as well as reeds and rushes line the banks, with white water lily fields in between. Still water zones alternate with lively rapids. Another special feature is the last groin fields of the Saar near Wiltingen. Many animals live in and around the water, including cormorants, herons, and kingfishers. Due to the narrow river bends and the steep gradient, the river section could not be expanded for ships during the Saar canalization in the 1980s. Instead, the side canal between Biebelhausen and the Kanzem lock was developed.

A very special landscape experience is promised by a canoe tour through the Wiltinger Saarbogen. In connection with the Saar canal, the trip can be conducted as a circular tour. There are entry and exit options in Schoden.

The best view of the Wiltinger Saarbogen is from the viewpoint Galgenberg in Wiltingen.
