Thorn Castle Winery

SCHLOSS THORN, the oldest castle winery on the Moselle, is located 20 km east of the city of Luxembourg, directly opposite Remich on the Moselle.

A river crossing below the castle was the reason the Romans built a watchtower on a protruding rock. This tower gave its name to the castle, Latin: "Turris" = the tower. In accordance with the requirements of the past two millennia, the facility has been expanded, remodeled, and renewed, so that today the architectural styles from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque to the Empire can be seen on the buildings of the castle complex.

Following a tradition of millennia, today in the castle vineyards, which have been in family possession since 1534, vines of the varieties Riesling, red and white Elbling, Sauvignon Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris, as well as Pinot Meunier for red wine, are cultivated. They all grow on shell limestone.

Those who come here are warmly invited to taste the wine at the place of its origin. “CELLA VINARIA” – named after the Latin word for cellar – is what Baron von Hobe-Gelting calls his tasting room.
