Cycling fun along the rivers - discover Saar, Upper Mosel, Saargau

The circular route starts at the Tourist Information in Konz. On the left Saar side, you cycle along the river, past idyllic wine villages and the world-famous vineyard Ayler Kupp, to Saarburg. Discover the waterfall in the middle of the old town and the castle complex high above the Saar.
You leave the Saar cycle path and cycle along the Leuk to Trassem and further uphill to Merzkirchen. Over the agriculturally shaped Saargau, you reach the wine village Wincheringen on the Upper Mosel. Along the German Mosel side, you go downstream to Nittel. Excellent wineries and outstanding gastronomy invite you to linger. Continuing along the Mosel cycle path, past the villages of Wellen, Temmels, Oberbillig and Wasserliesch, you reach the confluence of Saar and Upper Mosel and return to the starting point, the Saar-Mosel town of Konz. We recommend a visit to the open-air museum Roscheider Hof at the end.

Start your bike route at the Tourist Information Konz (Saarstr. 1). Cross the Saar bridge. After the bridge, turn left and cycle to the Saar. Follow the Saar cycle path to the right towards Saarburg. You ride along the Saar canal. On the opposite Saar side, at the height of Schoden, you will see the Bismarck tower. Next, you pass the famous vineyard Ayler Kupp. On the steep slate slopes of the Saar, wine is grown on 800 ha of vineyard area, 80% of it Saar Riesling, which convinces worldwide with its minerality, lightness, and a fine acidity play.

Once in Saarburg, cycle up the hill to the right at the Saar bridge and through the tunnel into the city center (Graf-Siegfried-Straße). Visit the waterfall in the middle of the old town as well as the castle complex high above the Saar.

Continue your ride along Heckingstraße towards Trassem (Note: Before reaching the federal road B407, the cycle path leads over a parking lot). Cycle along the Leukbach. In Trassem, follow Mühlenstraße, then right through Brückenstraße, left into Kirchstraße, and right into Saarburgerstraße. Leave Trassem via Kehrbachstraße, past the idyllic fishing pond.
Follow Kreisstraße 121 through the forest to Portz. Leave the place via Lindenweg. At the next intersection, turn left to Merzkirchen. Follow Op de Schanzen street, turn right into Raiffeisenstraße and continue via Hauptstraße and L134 towards Bilzingen. You cycle over the agriculturally shaped Saargau, the ridge between Saar and Obermosel. Wide fields and orchards shape the landscape. The region is known for its apple wine Viez. In Bilzingen, cycle through Moselstraße and continue on L134 to Wincheringen. Enjoy the view of the Upper Mosel and neighboring Luxembourg! Through the wine village (Römerstraße, turn left into Warsbergerstraße and immediately right again into Straße Am Markt, further over Bahnhofstraße) you descend to the Upper Mosel and the border with Luxembourg. At the Mosel bridge, stay on the German side and turn right onto the Mosel cycle path towards Nittel. Compared to the further Mosel course and the Saar, the area of the Upper Mosel is wide and flatter. The Romans already cultivated Elbling on the shell limestone soils of the southern wine Mosel, today the Upper Mosel is Europe's largest Elbling growing area. Upon arrival in Nittel, you will see the shell limestone cliffs above. Renowned wineries and excellent gastronomic businesses invite you to linger. The last part of the bike route leads you through the valley of the Upper Mosel, along the wine villages Wellen, Temmels, Oberbillig, and Wasserliesch. Between Oberbillig and Wasserbillig in Luxembourg, the first electric solar ferry of Germany operates. Past the confluence of Saar and Mosel, you reach your starting point again at the tourist information in the Saar-Mosel town Konz via the Saar bridge.
