The Schindler of Nebraska
22. October 2026
Lecture series on civil courage "Resistance and Solidarity".
With films, discussion evenings, and lectures that deal with forms of resistance against injustice and with acts of solidarity, the initiative "Eyes Open Against Anti-Semitism and Other Forms of Group-Based Hostility" of the Local Alliance for Family e.V. aims to encourage engagement with the questions of our time.
David Kaufmann: his solidarity saved many lives.
For generations, there were close connections between the Jewish Kahn families in several places of the region, Luxembourg, and Lorraine. During the Nazi persecution, these relationships became vital: from solidarity came rescue, from familial closeness came support.
At the center is the story of David Kaufmann, who vouchsafed for over 80 Jewish families and enabled about 200 people to escape from Nazi terror. In the USA, he was referred to by one of those saved as the "Schindler of Grand Island, Nebraska." While many countries closed their borders, Kaufmann courageously took responsibility for numerous refugees – convinced that help was more important than prejudices.
The lecture shows how the rescue actions were organized, what obstacles had to be overcome, and how strongly family networks contributed to survival. Moving destinies make visible how solidarity could save lives – and why these stories continue to resonate to this day.
