Lecture series on civil courage “Resistance and Solidarity”.

With films, discussion evenings, and lectures focusing on forms of resistance against injustice and on acts of solidarity, the initiative “Eyes Open Against Anti-Semitism and Other Forms of Group-related Hostility” by the Local Alliance for Family e.V. aims to encourage engagement with the issues of our time.

The cross-border collaboration of resistance fighters against the Nazi regime has been little researched so far. Research often remains nationally limited and overlooks transnational networks that existed between Luxembourg and Germany from 1933 onwards. Based on the biography of Matthias Haas and his wife, Günter Heidt shows how these networks functioned and what risks they faced. Haas came from an anti-militaristic family; reading “Mein Kampf” strengthened his resolve to resist. In 1933, he joined the KPD, founded an anti-Hitler group, and made contacts with the Luxembourg KPL. In Luxembourg, he worked undercover in a painting company and organized the secret production and distribution of leaflets. In 1936, he was sentenced to three years in a penitentiary for preparation for high treason. After further protective custody, he fled in 1939 with his wife Justine and their four-year-old son to Luxembourg, where both continued to be active for the KPL and, among other things, helped French and Serbian prisoners of war to escape. After the liberation, Haas worked in Trier and got involved in the organization “Victims of Fascism”.
