Old Town Saarburg

Im Staden, Saarburg

Situated right on the Saar, with colourful fishermen’s and maritime houses. On the houses a range of old plaques can be seen. The inscriptions mostly state the initials of the builder and his wife, the year it was completed and the symbols for his profession. Motifs such as fish, anchors, boathooks and rudders point to the seafarers and fishermen who once lived here. The flood protection wall was built during the expansion of the Saar to a large navigation route. In previous years the old town had constantly been threatened by floods. Various high water levels are marked on the rows of houses.
